Strengthening Reliability for Space Applications Through International Collaboration

Developing electronics for space applications places extraordinary demands on quality, reliability, and verification. When Hungarian space technology company REMRED Space Technologies required additional FPGA verification expertise for the COCA project, they partnered with EmLogic to help strengthen the verification effort and contribute to a robust development process.

The collaboration combines REMRED’s expertise in space-qualified FPGA solutions with EmLogic’s specialist competence in FPGA design and verification.

About REMRED and the COCA Project

REMRED is a Hungarian space engineering company developing advanced electronic systems and FPGA-based solutions for demanding aerospace and space applications. Through the COCA project, REMRED is developing technology intendedfor high-reliability environments where system robustness and predictable behavior are critical. Coca is short for Comet camera, a high-resolution camera operating in the visible and near-infrared spectrum, designed to capture thefirst-ever close-up images of a pristine comet.

As FPGA devices increasingly become the heart of modern space electronics, extensive verification is essential to ensure that designs operate exactly as intended under all relevant operating conditions.

EmLogic's Contribution

As part of the project, EmLogic supported REMRED with FPGA verification activities.

Our engineers worked closely with REMRED’s development team to strengthen verification coverage and help validate FPGA functionality through structured verification methodologies.

The cooperation focused on:

  • FPGA verification planning and execution
  • Verification environment development
  • Functional verification and testbench implementation
  • Verification coverage and quality assurance
  • Technical collaboration between distributed engineering teams

By combining expertise from both organizations, the project benefited from increased verification capacity and an independent review of critical FPGA functionality.

Leveraging UVVM for Efficient FPGA Verification

A key element of the collaboration was the use of UVVM (Universal VHDL Verification Methodology), an open-source verification framework widely adopted by FPGA development teams around the world. Originally developed in Norway, by developers now working in EmLogic, UVVM provides a structured and scalable approach to FPGA verification while enabling highly reusable and maintainable VHDL-based test environments.

EmLogic has extensive experience applying UVVM in demanding FPGA projects across multiple industries. By leveraging UVVM, the team was able to create robust verification environments with improved test coverage, automation, and traceability, ensuring a high level of confidence in the verified designs.

A Strong Technical Partnership

One of the strengths of this collaboration was the close interaction between engineers in Norway and Hungary. Despite operating across borders, the teams established an efficient working relationship centered around technical excellence, transparency, and shared engineering standards.

For EmLogic, the project also demonstrates how specialist FPGA expertise can be integrated into international development programs where access to highly specialized competence is critical.

Looking Ahead

Space systems continue to increase in complexity, making verification and validation more important than ever. Collaborations such as this demonstrate the value of bringing together specialized engineering teams to solve demanding technicalchallenges.

We would like to thank REMRED for their trust and excellent cooperation throughout the project. We look forward to following the continued progress of the COCA project and exploring future opportunities to work together.
